The Night of Reckoning

On Sunday night September 13th, 2015 I made a mistake. I allowed myself to be baited into a road rage incident that resulted in a heated verbal exchange between me and another motorist.

By the grace of God, cooler heads prevailed and I returned to my vehicle avoiding a physical confrontation. As I drove away I was relieved, that I avoided any physical harm to myself or others, but little did I know the internal damage had already been done.

Ironically, I was on my way to my church Small Group meeting when this incident occurred and my first inclination was to go home as I knew I had missed it on this test. I felt ashamed and unworthy to be in the company of my Christian brothers after what I had done.

As I continued to drive the Holy Spirit quickened in me and reminded me that there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus and that isolation is the final step before the enemy moves in for destruction. Therefore, I decided to go to Small Group in spite of what had just happened.

At the time I was a newer member of the group, but from day one I was made to feel at home. I’d always been reluctant to join a Small Group because I didn’t want others in my business and it was very hard for me to trust the genuine goodness in others.

However, since joining this group of Christian men I have found the transparency and unconditional love to be invaluable assets to my life. I knew that I could go to Small Group and talk to other men of God openly about my anger issues without being judged and receive prayer upon request. I knew the guys would minister to me as needed in love, not condemnation.

As I arrived at Small Group I noticed that I had a very intense headache and was starting to experience chest pains as well as shortness of breath. I made it to the house where our leader, Phil, greeted me. He could sense I wasn’t feeling well so he offered me a seat and a glass of water.

As other members of the group arrived they could sense the same. Before Group started I excused myself a few times to go to the restroom as the headache intensified and nausea set in. When I returned from the restroom a second time I informed the Group that I was going home to get some rest.

The Group insisted that I let Mark who is an EMT/Firefighter, take my vitals. Based on his readings he advised the others that I shouldn’t drive. Immediately Kimani, who initially invited me to the group, offered to drive me to the closest ER or Urgent Care.

He helped me to the car and ensured that I was as comfortable as possible. As we drove he could tell my condition was getting worse, so he pulled over and called 911. He kept me calm and conscious until they arrived and then texted the Phil with an update. Within minutes Phil and Mark came to where we were and Mark informed the responding EMT’s of his findings and recommendations.

When I arrived at the Hospital I was alone and frightened that I may be experiencing a heart attack, stroke, or onset of an aneurysm. Soon Kimani and Robert showed up in my room. They talked to me and comforted me until my wife arrived.

Mark and Phil took my car home and informed my wife of the situation. Shortly thereafter Mark arrived at the hospital along with my wife as he had followed her to ensure she made it without incident. Upon their arrival Kimani and Robert gave them updates on my condition.

Before they left, the three brothers prayed for me and my family. They also informed me that Phil had taken our daughter back to his house and that he and his wife, Julie, would watch her as long as needed.

I’ve told these men Thank you, but I could never thank them enough for what they did for me last on that scary Sunday night. Their quick response and decisive actions saved my life. They’ll never admit it, but their actions were nothing short of heroic.

I know they didn’t do it for the recognition; they did it because it was the right thing to do. I’m sure they don’t want to take any credit because they were just displaying the love of GOD from their true character. However, I just wanted the world to know Small Group participation is not in vain. It is bearing fruit and I’m living proof that authentic manhood works.

Thank You Gentlemen,
God Bless!

It’s Possible

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

Often times in life we take a pessimistic view when faced with life’s challenges. We spend all our time seeing the obstacles instead of focusing on the opportunities within the challenge. Through this type of thinking we not only limit our own abilities, but we constrict the flow of God’s power that is available to work on our behalf.
Anything is possible to them that believe, but most of the time it is believing that we deserve to be blessed that is hard to comprehend. As children of God it is his pleasure to bless us, but we must first come into an understanding of who we are, and what deserve as heirs to God’s throne.
Once we have adjusted our mindset it will enable us to take action to manifest our dreams as opposed to sitting idly by watching others realize their dreams. It has been said, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
If you can believe it, you can achieve it. If God has placed a vision on your heart, don’t hesitate to put feet to the vision and trust that I He has given it to you that He will equip you with the tools and drive to make it come to pass. Start today. Go for it!

“The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it”
Chinese Proverb

Be Hungry

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
-James 2:17-

My entire life I’ve made excuses and blamed person after person for my shortcomings while all the while I was sole source of my own pain and misfortune. The only thing or person that was holding back was me. Truth be told, I allowed my fear of failure outweigh my desire to succeed. I blamed my lack of conviction and focus, inability to follow through, and tendency for procrastination on everyone but the man in the mirror.
It has been said that courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to feel fear and do it anyway. I’ve spent a large portion of my life stuck in the paralysis of analysis as opposed to having the courage to fulfill God’s true purpose for my life.
Through the encouragement of my biological and church families I have discovered the courage and intestinal fortitude to move forward with the vision God has given me to share my life experiences with the world.
If not for their love and actions I wouldn’t be here today, and the dreams God has given me would have died with me. It has been said that the saddest thing is for a man to be lying on his death bed with all his hopes, ideas, and dreams standing around him saying, “We were given to you, only you could have given us life, but because you failed to do so, we must die with you.” Miles Munroe said, “the richest place in the world is not the diamond mines in Africa, it’s the graveyard, because there you will find books never written, dreams never fulfilled, etc. “
Whatever your dreams are, whatever your goals are, know this. You are greater than you think you are. Whatever you are seeking is also seeking you. Don’t hesitate any longer. Step out on faith and let God turn your actions into your reality. Give Him your little portion and watch Him multiply it into His abundance.

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

Will

You will be what you will to be;
Let failure find its false content
In that poor word “environment,”
But spirit scorns it, and is free.
It masters time, it conquers space,
It cowes that boastful trickster Chance,
And bids the tyrant Circumstance
Uncrown and fill a servant’s place.
The human Will, that force unseen,
The offspring of a deathless Soul,
Can hew the way to any goal,
Though walls of granite intervene.
Be not impatient in delay,
But wait as one who understands;
When spirit rises and commands,
The gods are ready to obey.
The river seeking for the sea
Confronts the dam and precipice,
Yet knows it cannot fail or miss;
You will be what you will to be!

Bear Fruit

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
John 15:8

Often times we have lofty goals and expectations of what we expect in our lives. However, the cares of this world cause us to abort our mission long before what we are anticipating manifests. Nevertheless, we continue on in life with the delusion that someday if we wish hard enough, that which we desire will magically appear. Without any effort we hope for the best, but deep down inside, in places we don’t talk about, we expect the worst. Les Brown said “that you should judge a tree by the fruit that it bears, not by the fruit it talks about, not by the fruit it wants, but by the fruit it bears.” In order to make our dreams a reality we must utilize discipline and effort. We must engage in daily activities that move us in the direction of that which we desire. It is then, and only then that we will realize the fruit of our labor and the manifestation of our goals.

“WANT shows up in conversation – EXPECTATION shows up in behavior.”
Les Brown

My Wage

I bargained with life for a penny,
And life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my spanty store;

For life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of life,
Life would have paid.

Keep Moving Forward

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
James 2:26

Faith moves forward. Don’t always try to figure out exactly what God is doing or wants to do in your life before taking action. The bible says, for the just shall live by faith, not by sight. Trust in God, knowing that He has a plan and purpose for your life. Don’t try to figure Him out with your finite mind for He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all we could ask or think. Don’t lean to your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path. Don’t get stuck in the in the paralysis of analysis by over thinking a situation. Be willing to step out on faith. Give God something to work with and watch Him turn your natural into something super.

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Henry David Thoreau

Be Fearless

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:17

Jesus said, “In the world we will face trials and tribulations, but to be of good cheer because He has overcome the world.” This is not always easy to do as our flesh and spirit are in a constant battle. His Word tells us to be strong and courageous, but our circumstances scream run and hide. Its okay to feel afraid as fear is a natural emotion, but we miss it when we allow ourselves to be paralyzed by fear. The enemy wants us to allow the “what ifs and maybes” to cause us to abort the mission that God has placed in our hearts to carry out.
In order to overcome his deceitful trap we must keep moving forward in faith trusting God will equip us with the weapons we need to overcome the lies of the enemy. We must fix our eyes on Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith. Even when we feel overwhelmed by fear we must face that fear and do it anyway. Step out of your comfort zone today and begin that thing God has called you to do. Starting a business, writing a book, recording a CD; whatever it may be, take the first step. Be true to God’s calling in your heart and watch as he gives you the strength and courage to press through your fear and realize your purpose.

“Don’t allow the fear of failure outweigh your desire to succeed.”

Don’t Give Up

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
John 16:33

God the Father has promised us the victory in Christ. This doesn’t mean that we won’t face challenges in this lifetime, but what it does mean is that if we endure hardness as good soldiers whatever He brings us to, He will bring us through. He encourages us to be at peace knowing that for every situation we face in life He has already made a way of escape. Nothing surprises Him. Before the foundation of the earth He knew you. He formed you in your mother’s womb and knows the exact number of hairs on your head. He promised to never leave or forsake you. Even in knowing these things it is still not always easy to face the challenges the world brings, but understand that it is okay to feel afraid, but don’t be afraid. Fear is a natural emotion, but how you respond to it will determine the level of victory you experience. No matter what challenges lie before you face them boldly knowing that His grace is sufficient and His strength is made perfect in your weakness. As promised, He has overcome the world and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
